Army of the Potomac Series

The APS began in 1993 with the publication of the 93rd Pennsylvania regimental. It is a select series of reprints and new publications, sturdily and attractively bound. Reprints often contain new material. Subscribers to the series pay a $25.00 fee. In exchange, they receive advance notice of new publications in the series and can purchase them at pre-publication saving of at least 20%. New subscribers are always welcome, and anyone who joins may purchase any of the in-print titles at a 20% discount. Titles may also be ordered separately.

Title: The Civil War Journals of John Mead Gould 1861-1866
Edited by William B. Jordan, Co-edited by Richard Sauers
Notes: 564 pp., Photos, Maps, Illus., 8 ½ x 11 size

Product Description:
Gould served in the 1st-10th-29th Maine and saw action in the East (Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Cedar Creek, Fisher’s Hill) and in the West (Red River).

“Of particular interest to collectors are Gould’s observations about Civil War arms and accoutrements. His description of his growing collection of Confederate buttons and other ‘Secesh’—souvenirs he ‘liberated’ with impunity—is fascinating. This is a well-edited, handsomely presented work...” North South Trader’s Civil War.

“Save for Wainwright, diaries and journals are generally only marginally useful in my view, but the Gould piece is a decided exception. In fact...it will instantly become one of the most commonly cited of all primary sources relating to the topics it covers. It is a fabulous document. It’s immediate, unvarnished, and full of detail and observation rarely found in a document of this sort.” John Hennessy.

“...an outstanding addition to Civil War literature. The editors and publisher are not only to be commended for bringing these journals to print, but for providing well-researched supplementary footnotes and introductory essays, clear and appropriate maps, and a useful index....a book that deserves a place in every research library.” Ethan Rafuse, Civil War News.
